Dark Light

Both Faouzia and bülow are talented Canadian songwriters/songstresses that deserve more recognition!

Faouzia

I first heard this wonderful voice of Faouzia through radio when her song “Hero” was playing. “Hero” has a very memorable and catchy hook that’ll definitely grasp your attention:

But what makes her stand out is her extremely stable and powerful live performance, something very rare to achieve even for a lot of mainstream superstars out there now.

“Hero” was released in summer but I actually only caught it via local radio recently. I wonder why hasn’t it earned any playback then cause if it was, it would be a summer hit!

At just 20 years old, Moroccan-Canadian Faouzia is already acclaimed as “the next big thing” by bustle. Other quotes from mainstream media include “One of the most powerful new voices you’ll hear this year.” by Billboard and “Faouzia is ready to take the world by storm…” by Idolator. No wonder Faouzia is able to capture attention through her powerful voice. Actually, she can sing, write her own songs and play multi instruments too.

“Hero”, for example, was penned by the singer/songwriter:

“I wrote ‘Hero’ late one night while taking a break from studying for my exams. Thematically, the song discusses having fair and reasonable expectations from the love you give and receive in a relationship or a friendship. It’s a two-way street and any healthy relationship needs both sides to be supportive of each other.”

Faouzia wrote this song last December while she was studying her final exams on computer-engineering. She completed a rough version in her basement studio and later worked with producer Alex Koste to shape the shimmering sonic atmosphere surrounding her lyrics.

She recently released another single called “Puppet”.

Lyric video of “Puppet”

“‘Puppet’ is a song about challenging relationship dynamics as a woman, taking charge, and shamelessly being yourself. I want young girls around the world to know that they don’t need to change who they are for anyone, and that someone that loves you shouldn’t ask you to be someone you’re not. If anyone tries to knock you down, or force you to conform, use that as motivation to stand up taller and only surround yourself with those that want to prop you up and support you. Throughout the song, the word “ حرية” is chanted, Arabic for “freedom.” As the world continues down a difficult path daily, this message is more necessary than ever.”

bülow

The last Canadian songstress I checked out is bülow. I heard a little ad snippet of “You & Jennifer” Spotify and I was hooked.

bülow (pronounced boo-low) has a soulful voice comparable to her peer Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish but her music style is more hip hop and urban pop.

bülow is a German-Canadian and goes by her surname. “Because I wanted to keep it totally gender neutral”. Same as Fauozia, bülow is still attending school, despite already being signed to one of the biggest record labels – Republic Records.

In case you missed it, the pop iconoclast picked up the award for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” at the 2019 JUNO Awards. She was only 19 years old and was the first-time nominee of the Awards.

After releasing her EPs “Damaged” Vol. 1, it earned bülow the “New Artist Of The Week” title from Apple Music Canada and “Best New Artist” in November 2017 by Pigeons and Planes. She later released “Damaged” Vol. 2 which features the iconic lead “You & Jennifer”.

Following the success of the “You & Jennifer” original release, bülow partnered with Rich The Kid and released “You & Jennifer (the other side)” version.

The new verse by Rich The Kid completes the storyline by adding another perspective from a man’s point of view:

“I’m making love to Jennifer ‘cause I can’t f**k with you. And we was freaking on the weekend you ain’t have a clue. I was flexing on a b*tch had to drop my roof. Your last boyfriend, he had no coupe. Now my wrists so sick I ain’t had no soup. I need a b*tch to fall in love but it can’t be .”

I also liked a few other songs by bülow, such as “Two Punks In Love“, a standalone single and “Get Stüpid” from her “Crystalline” mini album:

Lately, bülow released “Revolver”,

Regarding the track, she shared,

“I want people to feel empowered listening to it. You are as powerful as you want to be. I don’t wake up every day feeling my most confident self. No one does. I struggle with finding my footing and falling into a state of confidence every day where what people say or do doesn’t affect me. It’s something I work on every day, but I know that when I am that and I believe it, I’m not afraid of fucking up/falling on my face. That’s how I want to live. And that’s what I want people to feel when listening to Revolver.”

Billboard touted it as “her strongest track yet.
